Big Walk 2018 itinerary

Date: March 16, 2018


Here is the plan for the next few days, so that you can visualise where our pilgrims are:

Thursday 15th March

Bus 219 bus at 6.56 or 7.08 or walk down Trinity Road to:

7.15am Meet at Tooting Bec underground

Travel to Southwark Cathedral for the starting point and day’s walk to Bexleyheath: (16 miles)

Attend 8.15 early morning service,

Canon Michael Rawson will bless the pilgrims before they set off. get passports stamped, coffee, photo shots (with Leigh Hatts author of “The Pilgrims Way Guidebook”), Johns sister Janet walking with us, then walk to Greenwich along the Thames Path to Greenwich, turn South at the Royal Observatory to Blackheath then several miles of roads/pavements to Bexleyheath where the hotel has a pool.

  • Southwark to Tower Bridge (1 mile)
  • Tower Bridge to Greenland Dock (3 miles)
  • Greenland Dock to Blackheath (5 miles)
  • Blackheath, via Shooters Hill to Bexleyheath (7 miles)

Friday 16th March

Depart Bexleyheath and walk to Chatham: (24 miles)

24 miles Long day of walking, but after a couple of miles you apparently start to see bursts of countryside, historic towns and churches. But Greenhithe to Gravesend  mostly road walking.

  • Bexleyheath to Crayford (1 mile)
  • Crayford, via Dartford, Stone to Greenhithe (5 miles)
  • Greenhithe to Gravesend (5 miles)
  • Gravesend to Church Street (5 miles)
  • Church Street to Rochester (6 miles)
  • Rochester to Chatham (2 miles)

Second night in Chatham


Saturday 17th  March

Depart Chatham and walk to Faversham (23 miles):

Another long day of walking but pleasant countryside.

  • Chatham, along Saxon Shore to Gillingham (4 miles)
  • Saxon Shore to Breach (5 miles)
  • Breach to Sittingbourne (5 miles)
  • Sittingbourne to Stone Farm (5 miles)
  • Stone Farm to Faversham (4 miles)

Third night in Faversham


Sunday 18th March

Depart Faversham and walk to Canterbury (10 miles):

A more reasonable day to allow slightly later start (10am?) so anyone wishing to join us/take train to Faversham to meet us to walk on to Canterbury Cathedral in order to get there in time/ mid afternoon, before evensong (meet us at a pub close to the Cathedral? . Then either train home or car if anyone is driving back. Trains to Faversham from Victoria Stn – 1hour 24 mins Trains to Canterbury 1 hr 40mins from Victoria, or an hour from St Pancras

  • Faversham to Dunkirk (5 miles)
  • Dunkirk via Harbledown to Canterbury (5 miles)
  • Get to Canterbury in time for choral evensong at 3.30pm…….! Meet up with families/friends.
