We welcome all people to our church, wherever you are on your journey of faith. We encourage reflection, question and discussion to help us explore and deepen our Christian faith. We strive to reach the needs of our congregation, the local community and beyond.

Marriage is a significant step in a relationship and your wedding day should be one of the most important and memorable of your life. We warmly welcome anyone who wishes to get married at St Mary Magdalene and will work with you to ensure that your wedding is a happy occasion.

You can marry at St Mary Magdalene if you can show that at least one of you:

  1. has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months (to see a map of the parish click here);
  2. was baptised in the parish concerned;
  3. was prepared for confirmation in the parish; or
  4. has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months.

Alternatively you can also marry in our church:

  1. if one of your parents, at any time after you were born, has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months; or has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or
  2. if one of your parents or grandparents was married in the parish.

Legal Requirements

If you are both UK citizens and are eligible for marriage at St Mary Magdalene, it is a legal requirement for your marriage banns (click through to banns page) to be called in are parish. If one or both of you are resident in a separate parish, your banns will need to be called in this parish as well. If you are under 18 years old you will need your parents’ consent to be married and by law you cannot be married until you are 16. A wedding can take place on any day of the week (subject to agreement with the Vicar), but must take place between 8.00am and 6.00pm.

If one or both of the people marrying is a foreign national or if your marriage is to take place too soon for Banns to be read, then you will need to apply for a licence. The Vicar will advise you which licence is necessary.

Planning your wedding

The Vicar will help you to plan your Wedding service. A wealth of information can be found at the Church of England’s Wedding website. It is strongly recommended that you agree a date and time with the Vicar before making a reservation for your wedding reception. Availability of the church and the Vicar cannot be guaranteed.
