We welcome all people to our church, wherever you are on your journey of faith. We encourage reflection, question and discussion to help us explore and deepen our Christian faith. We strive to reach the needs of our congregation, the local community and beyond.

Wandsworth Prison Visiting Group

HM Prison Wandsworth is a category B men’s prison located within our parish. Currently able to hold 1,665 prisoners, it is the largest prison in London and one of the largest prisons in Western Europe. There is a large prison chaplaincy with chaplains from many different faiths. The chaplaincy is an important and well-respected part of prison life and offers support for prisoners both during their sentences and as they prepare for release.

For the past few years, St Mary Magdalene has supported the prison chaplaincy by sending a group to the prison each week to lead a bible study for a group of around 20 prisoners. The group usually opens with prayer and a hymn or a song. The bible study normally focuses on the Gospel reading for the coming Sunday. The prisoners divide into smaller groups, each facilitated by a member of our congregation, to discuss the reading. The discussion can often be lively and engaging.

Our prison visiting group currently has around 12 people, but new members are always welcome. Work in the prison can be immensely challenging, but equally rewarding. Any prospective member of the team will be subject to the prison’s security checks. If you would like to find out more, please contact our Prison Group Co-Ordinator, Tom Roberts.
