St Mary Magdalene Church, Wandsworth Common, stands in Trinity Road SW17, a Victorian survivor in a conservation area of Wandsworth. There is a small parade of shops and restaurants alongside it, their nineteenth century origins disguised by their plate glass windows, a modern block of flats and an old pub, being refurbished and modernised. The church, therefore, has the distinction of preserving its original appearance in a fast-changing world.

The parish includes the Common and its smaller, wilder cousin, known as the Scope1 on the two sides of Trinity Road. Just around the corner there is another parade of shops and a great many Victorian and Edwardian houses. Some street names reflect the fact that much of the land once belonged to Magdalen College, Oxford, and these enshrine the names of long-deceased dons. A part of the parish consists of streets and houses carved from gardens of the Burney family (descendants of Dr Burney who knew and entertained Dr Johnson), and this accounts for many of the ancient trees found in comparatively modern gardens.
